Short answer: mold-component machining accuracy and molded-part tolerance are related, but they are not interchangeable. A mold insert may be machined and inspected to a tight requirement while the finished plastic dimension is also influenced by resin shrinkage, part geometry, cooling, cavity balance, process settings, and measurement conditions.
This distinction matters during RFQ review. Buyers should specify the functional tolerance required on the plastic part, while the moldmaker determines the steel dimensions, adjustment allowance, machining process, and validation plan needed to support that requirement.
Three numbers that should not be confused
Machine positioning or equipment specification
An equipment specification describes the machine or measuring system under defined conditions. It does not prove that every feature on every mold component or molded part will hold the same number.
Mold-component machining accuracy
This describes a requirement applied to a particular steel feature after CNC machining, EDM, grinding, fitting, and inspection. At YIOT’s Dongguan manufacturing base, CNC mold-component machining accuracy can reach up to ±0.003 mm for applicable features and project requirements. This is a conditional machining capability, not a universal tolerance for complete molds or molded plastic parts.
Molded-part dimensional tolerance
This is the acceptance range on the finished plastic component. It must be evaluated dimension by dimension because the result depends on material, wall thickness, flow direction, gate location, cooling, draft, ejection, cavity count, and the approved molding window.
Why tighter steel does not automatically mean tighter plastic
After injection, plastic cools and contracts. Different areas of the part may cool at different rates, and reinforced materials may shrink differently along and across the flow direction. A dimension that crosses multiple walls, ribs, or flow regions can therefore behave differently from a small local feature.
Tool steel can also be intentionally left “steel safe” during the first trial so material can be removed after real measurement data is available. This controlled adjustment strategy is often more reliable than cutting every dimension to its final nominal value before the resin and process behavior are understood.
A better tolerance-development workflow
- Define function: identify interfaces, fits, sealing surfaces, alignment features, and dimensions that create real product risk.
- Review DFM: evaluate material, wall thickness, draft, gate, cooling, ejection, cavity layout, and measurement access.
- Set the mold strategy: choose machining and EDM operations, datum transfers, steel-safe dimensions, and inspection checkpoints.
- Run the first trial: mold parts using documented settings and collect measurements by cavity and feature.
- Correct and validate: adjust the tool where necessary, confirm the approved process window, and align the inspection plan with the drawing.
What buyers should include in the RFQ
- 3D CAD and a controlled 2D drawing
- Critical dimensions, datums, and functional fit information
- Production resin grade and color or additive requirements
- Expected annual volume and cavity target
- Inspection method, sampling plan, and reporting expectations
- Assembly or functional test requirements
- Any special documentation, validation, packaging, or traceability needs
When these inputs are available, engineering teams can evaluate whether a requested tolerance is realistic, where tool adjustment may be needed, and how acceptance will be measured. That produces a more useful quotation than a broad “high precision” label.
